What actually drives the price
Two websites that "look similar" can cost very different amounts. The price isn't really about the number of pages — it's about these factors:
- Custom design vs template — a unique design built around your brand costs more upfront than a customised template, but looks and performs noticeably better
- Functionality — a brochure site with a contact form is simple; a site with logins, bookings, payments or a custom admin panel is a different project entirely
- Content management — do you want to edit the site yourself later, or will a developer handle every update?
- Integrations — payment gateways, WhatsApp API, CRM connections, third-party APIs all add real engineering time
- Who builds it — a freelancer, a small agency and a large agency all price very differently for the same scope
Realistic price bands in India (2026)
These are general market ranges, not a quote — your actual cost depends on scope. But they're a useful sanity check against any number you're given.
Basic brochure website (5–8 pages)
₹15,000 – ₹40,000. A clean, professional site built on a CMS or templated foundation — good for most small businesses that just need an online presence.
Custom-designed business website
₹40,000 – ₹90,000. Unique design built for your brand specifically, mobile-optimised, SEO-ready, often with a blog or portfolio section.
E-commerce website
₹60,000 – ₹2,00,000+. Product catalog, cart, payment gateway and order management. Price scales heavily with catalog size and custom features (subscriptions, multi-vendor, custom checkout flows).
Custom web app, portal or CRM integration
₹1,50,000 and up. Logins, dashboards, databases, business logic specific to your operations — this is software development, not just a website.
Costs people forget to budget for
- Domain & hosting — usually ₹1,000–5,000/year combined, ongoing
- Maintenance — updates, backups and security monitoring, either a monthly retainer or pay-as-needed
- Third-party fees — payment gateway charges, WhatsApp API messaging costs, SMS/email service fees — these are usage-based, separate from the build cost
- Content — professional copywriting and photography aren't included in most development quotes unless specified
The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest website. Ask what happens when you need a change six months from now — that answer matters more than the number on the invoice.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Does the price include revisions? How many rounds?
- Will I own the code and have full access to my hosting/domain, or are you locked in?
- Is there a content management system, or do I need to pay you for every text change?
- What happens after launch — is support included, or billed separately?
- What's the realistic timeline, and what happens if it slips?
A vague answer to any of these is a bigger red flag than a higher price.
Why custom-built is usually worth it
Template sites are faster and cheaper to launch, but they show their limits quickly — generic design, slower performance, and awkward workarounds the moment you need something the template wasn't built for. A custom-built site costs more upfront but is built around exactly what your business needs, which usually means fewer expensive reworks later.
